Raymond G. Fischer was born January 9th, 1920, in a farm house west of Templeton, CA, and died at age 90, on January 26th, 2010, in Redding, due to complications from aortic stenosis. Ray was a graduate of Templeton High School and a student for two years at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
He worked for Pacific Telephone for two years in Paso Robles and married Lois Christeen Layne in 1942 before joining the Army Air Corps. After serving in such far flung places as North Dakota, Trinidad, Brazil and Italy, Ray was honorably discharged and returned to a career with PT&T, rising to District Manager, before retiring with 40 years of service. Ray and his family lived in Paso Robles, Hollister, Salinas, Merced, Redwood City, Napa, Redding and Sacramento over the years, and recently sold their Carmichael home of 42 years, returning to Redding to be closer to family.
Ray is survived by Chris, his wife of 67 years, by sons Steve and Phil, sister Berniece, their families, and many other relatives and friends who appreciated his fine mind, keen sense of humor and great warmth.
Although Ray requested no flowers, no service, and most of all no speeches, a brief interment service will be held at the Northern California Veterans' Cemetery in Igo, CA, on Friday, February 5th at 12:45 p.m. If you care to stop by for a "kind word and a touch of the hand," he would understand.
Instead of flowers, please contribute to a school music program or to the 501(C)(3) Straight Ahead Big Band Institute, c/o Ray Fischer, 2359 Suzette Avenue, Redding, CA 96002.
